The purpose of the Traffic Safety Unit is to create safer roadways for the community, which includes motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The Traffic Safety Unit strives to achieve this mission by pro-actively enforcing traffic laws to educate and deter violations, prevent traffic collisions, and reduce impaired driving deaths.
The Traffic Safety Unit officers work throughout the Town using a variety of marked and unmarked patrol vehicles and police motorcycles. Officers are highly trained in using speed measurement devices (RADAR and LIDAR), Traffic Incident Management, At-Scene Traffic Collision Investigation, Technical Traffic Collision Investigation, Traffic Collision Reconstruction, DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.
The Traffic Safety Unit has three positions funded and made possible by State Grants. The Grant officers focus enforcement and education on traffic safety aggressive and impaired drivers.
The Traffic Safety Unit also utilizes several speed trailers to address speeding complaints. These speed trailers monitor traffic, store statistical data, and display vehicle speed to encourage drivers to follow the posted speed limit. Officers utilize state-of-the-art computer and video technology to address calls for service and community complaints and initiate proactive enforcement in identified areas of concern or dangerous driving.
In addition, the Unit also handles many notable assignments, including but not limited to parades, dignitary escorts, special events, funeral escorts, and other public relations projects.
